Where to Escape Tourist Crowds in Rwanda/4×4 Rwanda Car Rentals

Where to Escape Tourist Crowds in Rwanda, Rwanda is famous for Kigali, gorilla trekking and the major national parks, but there are plenty of quieter places where travellers can experience the country’s landscapes and local life away from the busiest tourist routes. For visitors travelling by rental car, these destinations are especially interesting because they can be incorporated into a flexible self-drive itinerary.

1. Gishwati-Mukura National Park

Gishwati-Mukura National ParkIf you want forests without the crowds associated with Volcanoes and Nyungwe, Gishwati-Mukura National Park is one of the best choices. It is Rwanda’s fourth national park and remains a relatively small and developing tourism destination. Visitors can experience chimpanzees, golden monkeys, forest walks and birdwatching.

Its location between the Lake Kivu region and Rwanda’s northern highlands also makes it ideal for a road trip. You can combine a forest visit with the Kivu Belt Road and nearby rural communities.

2. Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo

The Twin Lakes are an excellent alternative to spending all your time around the main Volcanoes National Park attractions. Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo sit among terraced hills beneath the Virunga volcanoes, creating beautiful scenery for photography, canoeing and relaxed lakeside exploration.

The area is particularly suitable for travellers who want to slow down after gorilla trekking rather than immediately moving on to another busy attraction.

3. Rusizi and Southern Lake Kivu

For a quieter Lake Kivu experience, head further south to Rusizi. Compared with the more popular lakeside destinations of Rubavu and Karongi, Rusizi receives fewer international visitors and provides a more relaxed atmosphere.

You can explore the lakeshore, visit nearby communities and use Rusizi as a gateway to Nyungwe National Park. The surrounding tea plantations also make the drive particularly scenic.

4. The Kivu Belt Road

Instead of simply visiting Lake Kivu’s major towns, consider driving along the Kivu Belt Road. The route passes through mountains, rural settlements, hills and forest landscapes, providing opportunities to stop and experience everyday Rwanda away from the main tourist circuit. Rwanda’s Gishwati-Mukura guidebook also highlights the route as a scenic way to explore the region.

This is particularly suitable for a 4×4 self-drive trip, where you can stop whenever you find an interesting viewpoint, village or lakeside location.

5. Lake Muhazi

Lake Muhazi offers another quieter option within relatively easy reach of Kigali. Instead of heading directly toward the country’s major national parks, travellers can spend time around the lake enjoying its peaceful scenery and rural surroundings.

It works particularly well for a short getaway when you don’t have enough time for a full national-park safari.

6. Huye and Southern Rwanda

Travellers interested in history and culture can head south toward Huye. The area provides a different perspective on Rwanda, with museums, cultural experiences, coffee and surrounding countryside. Rwanda’s tourism material identifies Huye and the southern region for cultural, historical, coffee and community-based experiences.

7. Tea Country Around Nyamagabe and Gisakura

Nyungwe forestThe tea-growing landscapes in southern Rwanda are another good choice for travellers looking for something different. Green plantations covering the hills provide excellent photography opportunities and a much slower experience than the country’s major wildlife attractions.

You can combine the tea areas with a visit to Nyungwe, making the journey itself part of the experience.

8. Nkombo Island

For something genuinely different, consider Nkombo Island in the southern part of Lake Kivu. The island provides an opportunity to experience lakeside community life, fishing and spectacular views away from the better-known tourist towns.
