Most Scenic Driving Routes in Rwanda
Rwanda is one of the best countries in East Africa for a road trip, thanks to its rolling hills, volcanic mountains, tea plantations, forests and spectacular Lake Kivu scenery. Many of the main tourist routes are paved, making it possible to explore much of the country by rental car, while a 4×4 becomes more useful for national park tracks and some remote areas.
1. Kigali to Musanze and Volcanoes National Park
The drive from Kigali to Musanze is one of the most rewarding northern routes. As you leave the capital, the landscape gradually becomes more mountainous, with terraced hills, rural communities and increasingly impressive views of the Virunga volcanic range. The main road is paved and is suitable for ordinary vehicles, although a higher-clearance vehicle is useful when continuing onto rougher roads around the park.
Musanze makes an excellent base for visiting Volcanoes National Park, trekking gorillas or golden monkeys, and exploring the surrounding volcanic landscape.
2. Musanze to Rubavu
For dramatic mountain scenery, the road from Musanze to Rubavu is difficult to beat. The route gradually descends from the volcanic highlands toward Lake Kivu, creating spectacular changes in scenery along the journey.
As you approach Rubavu, the landscape opens up and Lake Kivu becomes the main attraction. This route works particularly well as part of a longer trip connecting Volcanoes National Park, Lake Kivu and Kigali.
3. Rubavu to Karongi Along Lake Kivu
This is arguably Rwanda’s most scenic driving route. The road follows the eastern side of Lake Kivu between Rubavu and Karongi, passing through green hills, rural communities and lakeside landscapes. Views across the lake toward the mountains of the Democratic Republic of Congo make the journey especially memorable.
Rather than rushing through this route, travellers should allow time for photographs, village stops and lakeside experiences. Karongi is a particularly good place to spend a night and enjoy the lake before continuing south.
4. Kigali to Lake Kivu via Muhanga and Karongi
Another beautiful option is to drive west from Kigali towards Muhanga before continuing toward Karongi. The road climbs and descends through Rwanda’s famous hills before eventually revealing Lake Kivu.
This route is ideal for travellers who want to experience the transformation from Kigali’s urban environment to rural Rwanda and finally to the country’s spectacular western lakeshore.
5. Kigali to Nyungwe National Park
The journey from Kigali to Nyungwe is one of the best routes for travellers interested in forests, tea plantations and mountain scenery. The route commonly passes through Huye before continuing southwest toward Nyungwe.
Along the way, you can see terraced hills, villages and extensive tea-growing areas. As you approach Nyungwe, the landscape becomes increasingly forested and mountainous. This is an excellent route for combining a road trip with chimpanzee trekking, canopy walks and other forest experiences.
6. Karongi to Nyungwe
For travellers who want a less direct but more scenic journey, connecting Karongi with Nyungwe allows you to combine Lake Kivu scenery with Rwanda’s southwestern highlands.
This can be incorporated into a larger Lake Kivu–Nyungwe road trip, avoiding the need to return to Kigali between destinations. It is particularly attractive for travellers who want to explore Rwanda beyond the usual Kigali–Volcanoes route.
7. Kigali to Akagera National Park
The eastern route from Kigali to Akagera offers a completely different landscape. Instead of the mountainous scenery found in western Rwanda, the terrain gradually changes toward open savannah, wetlands and flatter landscapes as you approach Akagera.
The road to the park is generally straightforward, but once inside Akagera, travellers encounter unpaved safari tracks. A 4×4 is therefore a better choice for visitors planning extensive game drives, particularly during wetter conditions.
8. The Ultimate Rwanda Scenic Loop
For travellers with enough time, one of the best ways to experience Rwanda is to combine several of these routes into one road trip:
Kigali → Musanze → Rubavu → Karongi → Nyungwe → Huye → Kigali
This journey combines volcanic mountains, Lake Kivu, rural hills, tea plantations and rainforest into one circuit. It also allows travellers to experience the landscapes that give Rwanda its reputation as the “Land of a Thousand Hills.”
