Detailed 5-day Rwanda Self-Drive Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali → Transfer to Akagera National Park
Your Rwanda adventure begins with a warm welcome at Kigali International Airport. After picking up your 4×4 Rwanda self-drive rental, start the journey east toward Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s only savannah park and home to the Big Five.
Before leaving Kigali, you may choose to stop at the Kigali Genocide Memorial for a meaningful and educational visit, or enjoy a quick city tour to get a feel of Rwanda’s vibrant capital.
Arrive in Akagera just in time to settle into your lodge, relax, and enjoy the views of open grasslands and lakes stretching toward the Tanzanian border.

Day 2: Morning Game Drive & Afternoon Boat Cruise on Lake Ihema
Start the day early for a classic Akagera National Park game drive. With luck, you’ll encounter lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, rhinos, buffalos, hippos, antelopes, and countless bird species. The park’s sweeping savannah landscapes make this one of Africa’s most scenic wildlife experiences.
Return to the lodge for lunch before heading out for a relaxing boat cruise on Lake Ihema. This excursion brings you close to crocodiles, hippos, and aquatic birds, offering beautiful photography opportunities.
After the cruise, drive back to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 3: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
Enjoy breakfast and start your scenic Rwanda self-drive journey southwest toward Nyungwe Forest National Park, one of Africa’s oldest rainforests. Along the way, you may stop in Kigali for lunch, craft shopping, or market visits.
Before reaching Nyungwe, visit the Ethnographic Museum for insights into Rwanda’s cultural history. The rest of the drive takes you through rolling hills, tea plantations, and lush landscapes.
Check in to your lodge near Nyungwe, enjoy dinner, and rest as you prepare for the next day’s adventure.

Day 4: Chimpanzee Trekking → Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Start the day early with chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest, an experience filled with excitement as the forest comes alive with primate calls and birdsong. With the help of expert rangers, you follow the chimps as they leap through the treetops and communicate loudly with one another.
After the tracking experience, return to the lodge for lunch and begin your drive north to Volcanoes National Park, the home of Rwanda’s mountain gorillas. Enjoy stunning scenery as you approach the Virunga Volcanoes.
Arrive at your lodge in Musanze for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 5: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park → Return to Kigali
This is the highlight of your 5-day Rwanda safari. After an early breakfast, drive to Volcanoes National Park headquarters for a briefing on gorilla trekking rules and group allocation.
Trek through bamboo forests and volcanic slopes until you encounter a mountain gorilla family. Spend one unforgettable hour observing their behavior—watching playful juveniles, nurturing mothers, and the calm, powerful silverback.
After descending, return to the lodge for lunch before beginning your return drive to Kigali.
Depending on your departure time, enjoy a city tour or last-minute craft shopping before heading to the airport.
