A Short Yet Unforgettable Mountain Gorilla Experience
This 3 Days Rwanda Gorilla Tour is designed for travelers who want a powerful wildlife experience within a short time. In just three days, you will explore Kigali city, visit the famous Volcanoes National Park, and come face-to-face with endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
The adventure takes you to Volcanoes National Park, located in northwestern Rwanda. Covering approximately 62 square miles of lush rainforest, the park lies at the foothills of five spectacular Virunga volcanoes: Mount Karisimbi, Mount Bisoke, Mount Muhabura, Mount Sabinyo, and Mount Gahinga. The park shares borders with Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Congo’s Virunga National Park, forming part of the greater Virunga Conservation Area.
Volcanoes National Park is globally recognized as one of the best places in the world to see mountain gorillas. It also gained international fame through the work of renowned primatologist Dian Fossey, whose conservation efforts played a major role in protecting these gentle giants from extinction.
Beyond gorillas, the park is home to golden monkeys, forest buffaloes, bushbucks, black-fronted duikers, spotted hyenas, and over 170 bird species, making it a rich biodiversity hotspot.
This 3-day gorilla safari starts and ends in Kigali, Rwanda’s clean and vibrant capital city.
Day 1: Kigali City Tour – Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Your driver-guide will meet you at your hotel or at Kigali International Airport in the morning. After a short briefing about the safari, you will begin exploring Kigali — one of Africa’s most organized and scenic cities.
A key highlight of the city tour is a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where you will gain insight into Rwanda’s history and the events of 1994. The memorial is both educational and deeply moving, offering perspective on the country’s journey toward unity and reconciliation.
Depending on time, you may also explore local markets, craft centers, and historical landmarks before enjoying lunch in Kigali.
After lunch, begin your scenic two-hour drive north to Volcanoes National Park. The rolling green hills and terraced countryside along the way beautifully illustrate why Rwanda is called the “Land of a Thousand Hills.”
Upon arrival, check in at your lodge, relax, and prepare for the following day’s trek.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking – Cultural Experience in Musanze
After an early breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters in Kinigi for a 7:00 am pre-trek briefing by park rangers. During this session, you will learn important guidelines for interacting safely with mountain gorillas.
You will then be assigned to one of the habituated gorilla families based on your fitness level and preferences. Hiring a porter is highly recommended, as the terrain can be steep and muddy.
Gorilla trekking can take anywhere from one to several hours depending on the location of the assigned family. The hike passes through dense rainforest, bamboo zones, and volcanic slopes.
Finally, the unforgettable moment arrives — standing just a few meters away from a family of mountain gorillas. You will spend one magical hour observing them as they feed, groom, and interact. Watching young gorillas play while the silverback calmly oversees the group is a humbling and emotional experience.
After your trek, return to the starting point and receive your gorilla trekking certificate. You will then head back to your lodge for lunch and some well-deserved rest.
In the late afternoon, visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village near the park. Here, you’ll experience Rwanda’s traditional lifestyle, music, dance, and storytelling. Local community members share insights into their heritage, traditional healing practices, and daily life. It’s an engaging and interactive way to connect with Rwanda’s rich culture.
